Well it’s that time of year where our fields are once again green and lush! Many have asked what we are growing? Once the sweet corn crop is harvested, we plant Tillage Radish on those same rows to help keep the soil structure in place through the fall, winter and spring. By the time next planting season rolls around it will have virtually disintegrated!
So the last few days have been tumultuous on our late season Sweet Corn crop!! We received almost 6″ of rain and winds of over 70km/hr as well as hail! This field of dreams-the 9 acres we invested into sub surface drip irrigation-took the brunt of it! We truly believe God doesn’t promise stress free living but He does promise to carry us through it….and it sure seems He does!! This crop was totally flat on Tuesday evening and after 2 more severe storms you can see it trying it’s best to not just survive but thrive!! We are currently pumping nitrogen through the drip tape to give this crop an added boost to help it become all we need for your Labour Day celebrations!!!
Pollination is in progress!!
Each silk is attached to a single kernel of corn on each cob!! It is very important that pollen falls on each silk to produce a perfect cob of corn. At this stage of the growing process we can’t do overhead irrigation as it will disturb the process. This is just one more reason we are transitioning to a subsurface drip irrigation system!
Searching for silks…found some!!! An exciting time in corn production!
Notice the different rows…some tasseled out and some not as advanced?!?! This is a result of our experiment with the black mulch vs the clear mulch! Although the black gave us some advantage in weed control it is at least a week behind in heat units! Now we know…
The river has gone way down and most of the water has gone away. We will have some compaction issues to deal with later but other than that, the crop will bounce back with a little SLC (Snyder Loving Care)! This has been a challenging season for our early corn but we are amazed at its resilience…it’s designed to grow!!!
