POLLINATION IS UNDERWAY
You can smell the corn growing!
What an exciting time…the process of pollination is in full swing here at Snyder’s Sweet Corn!
Once the plant has stretched out and the tassels are reaching for the sky, the timing is perfect for the cobs to put out their silks! Now between wind and other natural efforts, the pollen will release from the tassels and land on the awaiting and sticky silks.
Did you know that each silk is attached to a kernel of corn, much like an umbilical cord to a baby? Once pollinated, the silk will naturally disconnect from the kernel and start to dry down and turn brown. Then each kernel will begin to plump up and be filled with the sweet and delicious flavour we all enjoy!
