Laying Biodegradable Mulch
Who’s excited to finally see some action in our sweet corn fields?!?! Here the guys are laying the biodegradable plastic mulch. We will go through with our special sweet corn ‘plastic planter’ once the soil has a chance to warm up a bit. We are trying something new this year by using both clear and black mulch on our small ‘garden’ plot to see if we can improve our weed control without losing heat units. Black plastic provides cultural control of weeds which allows us to reduce pesticide use. Better control=better corn=happy farmer & customers! POST SEASON UPDATE…black plastic mulch proved to be not a good option for this farm operation! The corn was very behind and the weed control was not that much better! That’s why we do trials!!!
