Looky here, looky here!!! Doesn’t this just make your mouth water???
Hidden in this cozy shell is a treasured treat! As the baby cob develops, everything it will need and be is already present…it just gets bigger! If you look close you can even see the short little silks growing along side each teeny tiny kernel!!
Stay tuned for more exciting growth details in my upcoming posts!! I can hardly wait!
(Caution and our apologies to those sensitive to the destruction of individual corn plants for research purposes)
If you look closely you can see the tassel as well as layer upon layer of leaves just waiting to stretch out! These leaves will allow the plant to take in all the sunshine and convert it to beautiful sweet ? !
Somewhere deep inside a baby cob of corn is developing…such exciting times ahead!!
Is it any wonder that green is my favourite colour?!?!
Each season is full of what we like to call ‘learning opportunities’. As farmers and stewards of the land, it is our responsibility to capitalize on what we experience and ‘grow’ from it. Here is a beautiful example of my farmer doing just that. With the help of our agronomist, he recognized the need for better fertilizer placement to help our corn babies get off to a great start. They built a double dry fertilizer system for our bare ground planter and added a dry placement program when we laid the plastic and this seems to be just what the plant doctor ordered!!
This has to be one of our finest and most even looking crops of sweet corn to date!! Just look at all those happy green plants doing exactly what our creator designed them to do!
What an exciting privilege it is to grow food for you and yours!!! Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your family’s table!!
Finally, after a long, cold winter, the day has arrived when we nestle some seeds into the ground!!
The biodegradable mulch will keep these seeds comfortable as they begin to germinate in the next few days!.
Our daughter Olivia is busy in the field planting the golden seeds of joy! This task is done at a steady speed of 2 MPH and requires much patience and attention to detail. Our tractors are equipped with sub inch accurate autosteer GPS to ensure that she stays on track while allowing her to watch the planter operations behind her. The wheels running on the plastic behind are making sure that the soil is formed in place so that each seed has good seed to soil contact which helps with even emergence.
There’s lots of planning and preparation that goes into growing our sweet corn but today’s the day that I feel like we get to really begin our 2018 season!
Here our hardworking kids are just beginning the process of putting down the biodegradable mulch that will help to warm the ground and nurture the seeds that will go in later this week! They have 1 acre completed and by the end of the day there will be 24 acres of ‘shimmering sea’.
We doubled the acres that we grow under ‘plastic’ this year to provide more corn earlier on in our season! We are looking forward to an awesome year and seeing you all again very soon!
