Radicle Roots

Corn isn’t just cool…it’s ‘radicle’!

This little seed was just a dry, shrivelled kernel in a bag a few short days ago! And today, after being snuggled in the darkness of some really great soil, it has plumped up and started to grow!

Here you see the long radicle or primary root which will become the lifeblood of this corn plant transporting water and nutrients up into the seed and allowing it to push out the baby shoot (on the right of the seed) and future leaves. At the same time, nodal roots(the really strong support roots) are pushing their way out into the soil
