IT’S CORN…DOWN THE ROW

What an incredible next stage we are witnessing now! The mesocotyl has emerged from beneath the soil and we call it a “spike”!

Seedling emerging through plastic-covered soil.

Each seed is planted 8” apart and each row is spaced every 30” across the field. We grow our sweet corn crop on the same row every year across all of our fields using sub inch GPS technology. This practice allows us to ‘drive where we drive’ and ‘grow where we grow’ in an effort to eliminate compaction in the root zone. Compaction reduces soil aeration and can stunt the root development which leads to weaker plants and stressed corn.

We are looking to see a plant poking through its hole at the same time as each of its neighbours…those that don’t come through the obvious holes will need a little help!
